Here's the whole story.... In 1978, the Woodrush (out of Charlevoix) went to Baltimore. The Woody crew picked up the Sundew and brought her back to Charlevoix (later to be swapped with Mesquite). During the 6 month deployment, there were no PCS transfers. So, when we got back to Charlevoix, we had a whole gaggle of new folks on the pier.
One evening during a Manitou Passage buoy run, we anchored early in Half Moon Bay and, well, that was the start of it. The next year, "they" did it to "them" until it climaxed a decade later as Lude mentions above. A shameful tradition is born. Unfortunately for me, I was there for the first incident, and again just after the last one.
