Anyone that was onboard '86 thru '87 will remember the last Kangaroo Court on the Mesquite. I was one the last group of boots to go thru that time honored tradition..LOL. I think by the time this Court reached our group in '86 it had reached its max in outrageousness.
Of course at the time of the Court and soon after, I hated everyone involved with it. I won't go too much into detail about what happened during this initiation, in case their are some younger viewers :-) So we were taked nude into the crews lounge and made to stand in ice water. Degraded and ridiculed.....welcome to the Mesquite.
Of course this time honored tradition came to an end....not because of her sinking....but because one boot had to cry to mommy. Then mommy cried to her congressman and he cried to the Coast Guard Commandant. Kangaroo Courts were banned on Coast Guard ships and stations after that. A couple Petty Officers were reprimanded and of course the Officers onboard the Mesquite were dumfounded that a Kangaroo Court was going on (even though they piped over the intercom that Kangaroo Court was being held)
Not saying this was one of my fondest memories, but at least I can say was the last to stand before the "Prince of Punishment" ...I was just mad because they made us take cold showers after the initiation.....some stuff took weeks to come off.....arghhhh....

Hey Lude,
Dont forget the "Apple of Truth" , which was an
onion greased with crisco! and the infamous "Toms Moms Cookie", Hot pepper and just about everything else that the cooks could through into it. I think I vomited for a week on that one, because i actually swalloed it due to the electrodes taped to my fingers, which gave you a shock anytime the P.O.s thought that you were lying to them. jesus christ , i think i need a Psychiatrist,I should have shot all of them!

I don't know how much of a 'tradition' this could have been. There was no initiation rite at all when I showed up in '80.

Here's the whole story.... In 1978, the Woodrush (out of Charlevoix) went to Baltimore. The Woody crew picked up the Sundew and brought her back to Charlevoix (later to be swapped with Mesquite). During the 6 month deployment, there were no PCS transfers. So, when we got back to Charlevoix, we had a whole gaggle of new folks on the pier.

One evening during a Manitou Passage buoy run, we anchored early in Half Moon Bay and, well, that was the start of it. The next year, "they" did it to "them" until it climaxed a decade later as Lude mentions above. A shameful tradition is born. Unfortunately for me, I was there for the first incident, and again just after the last one.
