Dino, Looks real good. When you have time maybe you could update the 'crew memoirs. Do I need to send the updated info again, just in case you lost it? Still looking for other crew, not much luck. Did I send you some new names that we came up with?

Awsome. Good info...almost too much info...I just want to dive it, not know about what the XO had for lunch prior to its grounding. Good stuff, though...great work, great knowledge-base.

Great site!

How about more underwater photographs?

Can you label the ones that you already have as the what and where we are looking at?

It would be interesting to see the grounding photos arranged in chronological order, due to the fact that the ship is heeling over further in some of the photos.

Dear Sir/Madam

My 5 year old son, James is very impressed with Coast Guard. We Have stopped at several Coast Guard stations, and have allways been treated very well. To James you Coast Guard are bigger than life. I`d be proud if he chose the Coast Guard, as a way of life. If you have any complimentary Coast Guard memorabilia you could send to James, he would be thrilled.Thank you for your time. Recall breaking ice Straits of Mackinac. Standing BMOW Duty. Ship is in heavy sea / lake fog. Just stepped onto the pilothouse/ bridge. Behind me is the Captain ( R W }. Ebert is the OOD . I see the laker , 000 degrees bearing to the MESQUITE [ not a good thing , as we were escorting her thru to the SOO ] and so did the CAPTAIN. To which he commands the helm to full right rudder , as he is on the top step behind me,no less. We end up on a paralel course for a bit .He requests Ebert to the lee bridge wing for a moment or two. The look out is asked to go into the pilothouse/bridge for a bit. When Ebert entered the bridge his voice is a few octaves lower. What really stands out to me is , this is my last trip before RELAD. "oy vay is mir".

Having recently completed four years active, I am now using the GI Bill to attend college. The subject of the Mesquite's grounding would be an ideal subject for a report in one of my classes. The only trouble is finding research materials. Specifically, I am looking for info on a book by the title "Shipwreck of the Mesquite: Death of a Coast Guard Cutter" by Frederick Stonehouse or any newspaper articles related to the grounding. The book is now out of print. Any info would be of great help and much appreciated.

What an amazing site...I had not heard of this disaster, and was shocked!...but...accidents do happen even to the best of crews and ships!...My former husband was a Coastie, and was stationed on a cutter out of Alameda Ca, and I visited on board many times!...It was a shock to look at the underwater photos...the soda machine.....the berths with curtains hanging...wow!...would love to see more, and be able to read more memoirs1...She was s grand old girl who served long and honorably...thankyou for keeping her alive on this site!...

Originally a crew member of the CGC Woodrush, I was striking DC3 when we relieved the Woodrush to the yards in Baltimore (I think). We were the first crew to have the Mesquite when she came to Duluth. Made DC3 on her and shipped out to New Orleans in December of 1978.

Sailed aboard from 84-86 as an MK3,I can still remember the things that happened like yesterday.Like walking on the messdeck and seeing the reports of the space shuttle on tv. The day the CO said we were NOT going to GRANADA and the day he said that we were. The things we did and the places that we went. Best 180'of the bunch and most memorable tour of my career. Now I am an MK1 on the Bristol Bay but I still remember the MESQUITE.

Served on the "Sentinel of the Door" 1966-1970. I was heartbroken to learn of her sinking. She was a fine ship with a great crew. All things considered I guess it's better for her to be an everlasting monument to all Mesquite class 180's than to be cut up for scrap metal. Hey Dave Tinkler, Dale Hicks, Pete Koebel, Ron Carlson, Paul Flack, Dan Tobias, Jimmy Nuzzo or any of the other men I served with, E-mail me sometime. God Bless the Mesquite and all who served on her.

I was C.O. of Mesquite from September of 1977 until June of 1978 when she was home-ported in Charlevoix, Michigan. I was also X.O. of Woodrush from 1968-1970 and worked the Keeweenaw Point buoy often. It was truly a sad day for me when I heard of Mesquite's sinking.

Served aboard mesquite summer of 62 `till fall of 65. Would like to hear from anyone aboard at that time. Sure would be interesting to know how all my shipmates have made out. We`ve never had any sort of get together that I`m aware of.Would be nice.I`d rather see my old shipmates than attend a class reunion. The pictures I`m viewing are not of the grounding off escanaba in 64 or 65 or is it? Can`t wait to view ships log.Keep up the good work.

I was on the Mesqite from 73-76. I was part of the crew that took her out to Portland Maine where we had two weeks to swap all of our gear to the Acacia, and get aquainted with WLB 406. Then headed down to Guatanamo Bay for Underway training. Meanwhile the Mesquite was headed for CG yard for the fram job. Read Stonehouses book in 1990. Couldn't put it down. Sad story. Last of the B class.

My dad was on the Mesquite while in the Guard sometime between 1953 and 1957. Would like any info on others on board or any photos or info from that time. Would like to get some info for him. Thanks for any help anyone would have. His name is James A. Levandoski Sr.

It is a great site. I have been looking at various CG ites in the wake of this weeks attacks on America Hoping I might find some old shipmates and friends to set up comms. with. I was 1st Lt in Mesquite and Sundew at Duluth July 80 July 83. When we gave up the Mesquite at the Soo I remember the XO Frank Lynch was asked by on of the departing Sundew crew, "do you think you lost anything special on this deal and he replied "yes Hull 305" " He was right it was a great ship. I did not serve under Bill Allison but I was in Naugatuck at the Soo with Hal Robbins and worked with him several times and he was a great CO and a very special human being.

I must say it's pretty wacky to see the u/w picts of the switch board we used to use to parralell ship to shore power! Brings back alot of memories. I served on the old girl from Nov 83 - Dec 85 and was on for the steam thru the St. Lawrence and down to Grenada etc. I got out in Dec 85 and now work as a lineman for the local power company. Thanx for all the time you all put into this site, I'll be back!

The Mesquite was my first duty station out of boot camp (Cape May) and I spent a total of (just under) three years aboard before going off to ET “A” school and onto the Pacific. I was 19 and came from CT where the legal drinking age was 18. It was 21 in MI. (Oh the horror!) My tenure as a deck hand ran from July 1982 through May 1985. I hauled a lot of buoys, tended a lot of lighthouses and slapped on numerous coats of that toxic smelling paint on every available ship surface. And I learned a great deal as a sailor thanks to a great deck crew.

Our trip to Grenada was particularly memorable. The St. Lawrence Seaway, the downed railway bridge in Canada which extended our stay in Toronto, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Barbados, St. Thomas, Haiti, Halifax, Quebec and of course, Grenada. Tequila on the docks, shredding bales of dope over the side in the Bahamas to dispose of it and coming into port in Ft. Lauderdale with our aft plastered with pot that stuck to the salt spray, entering Cuban waters to salvage the burnt hull of a dope packed shrimp boat to take evidence and not being able to respond to the little Cuban patrol boat with the BIG guns because Washington told us not to talk to them. Tattoos in Fort Lauderdale. Gwinny and her twin sister in Georgetown. Marines ready to shoot us for approaching the gates too fast in the liberty van. Scuba diving off the smugglers scow. The sunset tourist cruise in St. Thomas where we claimed to be from a research vessel sailing around the world. The little Columbian prisoner who got sooo excited at the prospect of being strip searched by Ensign Foster. The crazy Rastafarians in Greneda. It was a grand trip. RIP old girl. I hope to come up to Superior and visit you one of these days.

I was on the Mesquite from '79 to '81. I still keep in contact with H-man the Coast Guards only living Supper Hero. It's good to see some of you guys on this page Chris, Al, Norman. We had some good times on the Mesquite. It's a shame she went down.

Great what you have done for the memory of the Mesquite. I served aboard as a QM2 from march 84 to aug 86. Had many a great day sailing on her. I see some names from some shipmates, glad to see your still around. Im now a QMCM on the CGC BARBARA MABRITY as XPo. The former QM1 Rick Simmons is now a CWO and my CO. would like to hear from all former shipmates

Sailed on the grand ole girl from Nov. 78 until the swap with the Sundew in 80 as an MK3/2. We sure got the short end of that stick. The Mesquite engine room was as clean as clean could be, you could almost eat your dinner off the deck plates. I was saddened to hear of her demise, the best of the 180's. Fair winds and smooth seas ole girl.

Ens. Ebert was competent, reserved, phlegmatic and good humored. So what if the cap ripped him a new one? That's how it was done, screw up and you hear about it, old school. The Mesquite sunk to the ignominy of a diving attraction in an era of experimental social policy and oprahesque sensitivities: "Oh Ensign Doe! ... You nearly sunk us. Please, PLEASE, try and pay closer attention to what is happening. Thank you!!"

I was on the Mesquite in August 1961 for 2 weeks rate training (HM)unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. I did retain my medical log for that period, and can reflect with some of those on the report. I enjoyed my duty while there.
